Fluctuating Broadband Speed (Again)

Fluctuating Broadband Speed (Again)

A lot of people (possibly everybody) in the Purbeck Area are experiencing wild fluctuations in broadband speed again. To be fair, broadband speed results are never the same from one test to the next, but over the last three to four weeks my speeds have varied from a good 6 MB (6000 kbps) to an appalling 0.8 MB (900 kbps) in less than 30 mins… then back to 6 MB again an hour later.

Consistency in speed appears to be the number one problem (frustration) here in the Isle of Purbeck.

A number of people are running speed tests on a regular bases – I personally run hour tests using www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk as it keeps a record of all your tests and also allows you to export the results.

We would like to hear from anybody in the Purbeck area (Wareham through to Swanage) who is also experiencing fluctuating broadband speeds.

Please leave a comment below, stating your broadband supplier and a brief overview of the best and worst speeds.

  1. Very slow speed again today – 900kb. Anyone else experiencing this. We did get BT out to check it last time, but they ‘couldn’t find anything wrong either here or at the exchange’ – it’s frustrating not to have a reliable fast service! And if BT don’t understand why then who does. Is it worth changing provider??

  2. Download speeds variable. Over xmas/new year very bad. Line degradation became so bad dial tone fail and call logger intermittent. BT reported they had found a fault? LINE TEST SHOWED NO FAULT, but removal of bell wire increased line speed from 2 to over 4mB, BUT download speed never above 1.2mB. ISP sent BT for SFI investigation but he only came to test line! However the master socket was old so it has been changed to new with faceplate filter. Line speed increased to 7mB but still only 1.5mB download. Discovered variable noise margin all the time. Full profile reset has resulted in profile moving from 2mB to 6.5mB but still mostly get under 2mB downloads. Changed router same, changed to Thomson gives 8mB line speed but still only 3-3.5mB downloads, but improves variations in noise margins, but no improvement in download speed. Now expecting full sfi as fault has to be cable (damp?) crosstalk or equipment in exchange. Has anyone done plots of their noise margin? I use router stats v9.7 (free download). Anyone else have around 7-8mB line speed with low downloads?
