Degraded, inconsistent download speed – again

The problem of degraded, inconsistent download speed has returned. My download speed is currently fluctuating minute-by-minute, second-by-second – there’s no consistency whatsoever (for the last couple of hours throughput has rarely been higher than 2.5 Mbps on my 7 Mbps line, and ping times are inconsistent again). I’ve had enough. I’m probably going to switch to an ISP that has a better record of dealing with BT’s BS. It will cost more per month but I’m willing to accept that if it means a more consistent broadband connection.

If you’re having similar problems please complain to your ISP.

  1. I am not seeing speed fluctuations (in fact seeing good speed c 6.5mbs!).However, I do see what appears to be the connection regularly dropping.
IM’s (yahoo and windows live) keep going off and then showing they are reconnecting. At the same time the webpage that I am viewing goes blank and has to be refreshed.
This happens on both a direct link (cable) and on wireless on different pc’s and different operating systems.
Has anyone else noted this by any chance?

  2. My download speed is well below 2 meg again according to my ISP’s speed test. I had just started to believe the problems had been fixed, but no. Same issue that’s been affecting this area for over 6 months now. BT are a joke.

  3. I rarely get above .75mbps put presently I’m getting only 0.1mbps. Dial-up +1 in otherwords

It’s just dived through the floor this week. We get a rough deal anyway (sorry sir, too far from the exchange) but this is beyond a joke.

  4. 2 weeks ago I bought a new computer, which upgraded me from XP to Windows 7 64-bit.
Initially my broadband was fine but then started to go haywire, causing me to tear out what little hair I have left. Following all the threads about problems with wireless routers and Windows 7, it turns out that my router is supposedly fully compatible with Windows 7.

This morning a search has come up with your site, where other local users are experiencing this same total inconsistency from second to second. One minute I have 3.7Mbps, about the best I ever get, and the next perhaps only 0.4Mps. The worst of it is that when the signal drops off completely, this new computer requires me to shut it down, re-boot the router and only fire up the computer again once the internet signal has fully returned.

I am on The Ballard Estate using TalkTalk. Since other users sound as though they are with BT, it seems that the problem is indeed with the quality of the telephone signal rather than our providers. This estate is also probably out on a far limb of the exchange network.
